Current

 

Program Director, Antarctic Integrated System Science & co-Program Director, Antarctic Organisms and Ecosystems (AY 2017- 2020), Office of Polar Programs, National Science Foundation. Oversee ongoing funded research activities, plan future funding actions, communicate NSF goals to the broader scientific community, conduct merit review of submitted proposals, and coordinate funding actions and program priorities within Office of Polar Programs, the Geosciences directorate, and NSF. In combination, manage ~ 15M annual budget, > 50 individual projects, many with multiple PIs and institutions. Work with International colleagues to maximize program reach and success, while ensuring compliance with all International and National treaties, Polar Safety and Health, and Environmental protection regulations.

 

 

North Pacific Fisheries Management Council

Science and Statistical Committee Member (on leave of absence)

Evaluate the scientific basis of fisheries management policies and quota for federal fisheries in Alaskan waters. Provide advice relative to potential umpact of fisheries management plans and policies on marine mammal and seabird community members.

 

Alaska INBRE

Program Coordinator (AY 2016-2017)

 

Program Coordinator for the Alaska INBRE program AY2016-2017, a large ($18.5M/5yr) NIH funded award designed to enhance the biomedical research within the state through capacity building, research mentoring, and student training activities. Serve (since June 2016; on leave while at NSF) on the award Administrative core team, setting policy, reviewing funding applications, drafting reports. Assist leadership in increasing and diversifying the “pipeline” of undergraduate and graduate students entering biomedical and health research related professions. Responsible for increasing integration of biomedical and training activities across the Alaska INBRE network of researchers and students

  • Chair and Member of Department of Biological Sciences Graduate Program and Curriculum Committees, which provide oversight and guidance of graduate student education within the department (hiring, admissions, coursework, mediation) Member August 2000-2007, Chair 2007-2008, 2010-current.

  • Member of UAA’s Graduate School Action Team (GSAT) and Graduate Council, Member August 2007-2008, 2010-current, which sets overall University policies for graduate education

  • Chair and Member, Natural Sciences Peer Review Committee whcih evaluates faculty files for retention and promotion. Member AY 2012, 2013, Chair AY 2014,2015, 2016

  • Member Angus Gavin Memorial Migratory Bird Research Fund, Review Panel: evaluates funding applications in support of migratory bird research

  • Chair and Member, UAA Instiutional Animal Care and Use Committee. Chair 2001-06, Member 2000, 2006-09
